Former Defence Chief and Senior Military Psychiatrist join Veterans Aid
General the Lord Michael Walker, Chief of the Defence Staff from 2003-2006, is to become a Trustee of the charity Veterans Aid.
Dr Ian Palmer, Professor of Military Psychiatry and former Head of the MoD’s Medical Assessment Programme, is also to join the charity for veterans in crisis as its Honorary Psychiatric Advisor.
CEO of Veterans Aid Dr Hugh Milroy announced both appointments this week.
On retirement Lord Walker became Governor of the Royal Hospital Chelsea and was Chairman of the Trustees of ABF/The Soldiers Charity. He recently gave up these positions but will retain links with the ex-Service charity world through Veterans Aid. Dr Milroy said “I am honoured that he has seen fit to agree to become one of our Trustees. He and his wife Tor are wholeheartedly behind what we do!”
Professor Palmer’s appointment is a new one that formalises a long relationship with the charity. Dr Milroy added “His expertise adds depth and strength to our work. We are delighted to have someone of his military and academic provenance on our professional team.”
Lord Walker said, “I am delighted to join the trustees of Veterans Aid and to be able to help support those to whom we owe an incalculable debt for our own freedoms.”
Professor Palmer said, “I am honoured and privileged to be further involved in an internationally acknowledged NGO pre-eminent in helping the most disadvantaged and socially isolated ex-Servicemen and women.”
Veterans Aid has been caring for ex-Servicemen and women in crisis for nearly 80 years. It offers practical immediate help with problems including homelessness, addiction, mental health and legal issues. Its doors are open to veterans of all ages regardless of however long or where they have served. Its model has attracted the attention of governments and academic institutions worldwide.
