The Military and Hospitaller Order of St Lazarus of Jerusalem was founded in the Holy Land in about 1100, the Order was then a Hospitaller order and cared for the Templar knights suffering from leprosy. Subsequently these knights trained the brethren in the military arts, transforming the Order into a military one. The Grand Priory of Great Britain was originally established in Great Britain in 1157 at Burton Lazars, Leicestershire by Roger de Mowbray with the support of King Henry 11.

Today the Grand Priory, under the temporal protection of the Royal House of France, supports a major Leprosy charity, SOROL in Sri Lanka and its military charity, Veterans’ Aid.
